Re: spam forum

The problem nowadays isn't spam bots.

Spammers now hire people in India, china and other places like that to do mass signups.

Re: spam forum

Incorrect. A simple script can scan for standard forums, nuke, and other register pages. why would they pay any one any amount of money for something they can program in minutes. It's all about patterns and if your site uses stock loads.

Once you own a web server and you look at the web log you will see at the time of the spam post there are virtually 50-200 entries looking for standard web page loads.
Example

www.yoursite.com/phpbb3
www.yoursite.com/phpbb2
www.yoursite.com/phpbb3
www.yoursite.com/forums
www.yoursite.com/forum
www.yoursite.com/register.php
www.yoursite.com/signup.php
www.yoursite.com/login.php
www.yoursite.com/phpadmin
www.yoursite.com/admin.php

I can go on and on.
basically all a web site owner needs to do is to stand out from the rest

If you designed your own PHP site you would never see spam as the spammers would never take the time to map out your site

Re: spam forum

Not incorrect.  Spammers and scammers have been employing dirt cheap labor from third world and developing nations for years.

Shadow banning spammers can slow it down a bit if they think they're spam isn't being deleted so that they don't just sign up with multiple accounts to keep going.

Re: spam forum

They are used yes, but not to actually post, posts have hit my servers for years and they stream in the thousands per second, something no human can do, I've never even seen a single post for a single site, when you look at the web logs the scripts paths are visible, the "human" element simply updates the spammers links, It's possible but hard to believe any spammer would part with money when he can do the same with scripts.
It's all about numbers.
I sent the admin a few tips, Lets hope they work as I like the idea of this site and would like to see it get big traffic increase when all the new games come out.

Re: spam forum

Shadow banning the accounts would be a good precaution in the event their is a human operating it, or the even a bot using it.

Shadow banning is making the posts visible only to the account that posted it.  Everyone else does not see it.
The account holder has to log out and attempt to view the post to discover it's not actually visible.

IP blocking spam friendly ISP's would be a good idea.  there are lists available of them.

I watched your last to posted links and was about to reply that they look innocent, but I then noticed
http://gameupdates.org/details.php?id=4803
I take it from this post that it's from the torrent "comment", that's pretty interesting.
I have in the past used CCIP (now Code Crushers Log systems) which would control the users for the PHPBB forums, it would not allow them to post URL till after so many posts and record all their IPs and also IPs of those that just viewed the forum. I think this would well with punBB.
Since the user's posts have been deleted I'll wait and see what the next "spam" session shows for post timings, if they are all mere mili seconds apart then they are simple scripts that will easy to weed out, if not them something like CCIP should be installed.

When you look at gameupdates from and out side perspective, we should make sure the spam and illegal torrents never show in the public eye, this will help validate GU's in the average gamer's eyes and increase GU's www download usage overall.

I would be ready to dedicate a core server every other month, I was planning this a few years ago but got side tracked, having 20+ 3TB servers feeding just about every one on the planet, every server decreases each server's usage making the load on each server less. Torrents I think are the future
